Teaching Philosophy

My goal as an educator is to cultivate a positive learning environment that allows a student the freedom to express and create for themself, both as a musician and person. I want students to receive a well-rounded education so they can leave at the end of their time studying with me as not just better musicians, but better people.

I strive to foster a forgiving environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes. This way students can learn from their mistakes, like they would outside of lessons.

During a student's course of instruction, the student and I will identify appropriate goals, helping them achieve their artistic endeavors, and reflect on their own playing, allowing them to become their own teachers.

My main goal is to help facilitate a student's learning. As a teacher I am there for the student and to help them. I refer to my teaching as a student-centered approach. It is my goal to help a student learn what they want to learn and have a certain amount of say in their own education. Learning comes best when it is a collaborative effort between student and teacher, in which I help the student reach their goals. The more interested a student is in learning something they want to learn, the greater the effort they will put forth, which leads to a better education.

I believe that in teaching music we can apply the principles and techniques into many aspects of life. Through teaching I will help educate students to manage their time better by teaching them how to practice, which can be transferred to other aspects of education, such as studying and homework. I also believe that music can make people better listeners and communicators, using lessons to help train a student’s ears to listen to finer intonation and articulation, which can be transferred to listening when someone is talking, or how to communicate their ideas with someone.

By applying a well-rounded and holistic approach to teaching, students should leave their lessons with me being not only better musicians, but also more attentive and thoughtful people.
